Do you mean the drive unit? or the augers? You'll want a planetary auger drive unit so it will go in a 12 inch or bigger hole. Chain drives will run a long time, but you can't dig as deep. I like my Bobcat digger, very heavy built. It's a 15C model. As far as augers go, all mine are Pengo brand, and I love them. I just recently purchased a 15" auger from pengo for doing post frame construction. I also purchased their rock ripper attachment that bolts onto the end. I can get through most anything with this auger. The auger teeth have hooks . I need something that will handle an 8" auger, will probably get used for just a couple/few holes a year. I need an auger drive and rock bit (lots of weathered schist), and need recommendations on the brand. I'll probably only be drilling 30 or so holes, for now, but I want something descent. I am not inclined to hiring someone, either. I rented an auger from caterpillar and it had plenty of torque but it turned very slow which made it impossible to spin fast enough to clear the lose dirt from the bit. Are there any considerations that I should be aware of before I pull the trigger on the purchase? I prefer driving posts over an auger. When we first got a driver were on top of a shale hill, about six inches of soil and shale under that. Setting 2 7/8" pipe posts four feet deep. Took twenty minutes to drive the first, thought that was ridiculous, so put the hydraulic auger back on the skid steer. When I worked at Cat in the forestry division we were working with a guy out of Alabama who made one to fit our big industrial tractors. I scaled it down to fit a large track skid loader. It was a two blade design, 24" wide. It was crazy what that thing could do. Shave a 24 " oak stump down well below grade in under a minute.
