I have the 1740 and the piston for the pulley has snapped off from inside at the threaded portion. The piston was not in service for some time as the previous owner had disconnected the hydraulic line to it.
I found an old 1740 skid steer near me that the engine is good, hydraulics are good... but it just doesnt move. The seller claims the drive belt is broke, so I imagine its a pain in the rear job. Any advice, or is this a machine to walk away from?

This unit transmission was variable speed belt drive, followed by left and right forward and reverse clutch packs with 5 clutch plates each. 20 plates total. The 1740's variable speed was a reeves drive set up with the wide belt and a hydraulic control on the reeves drive. I have a problem with the 9" variable speed sheeve. It is pretty beat. I purchased a rebuild kit for the hydrolic cylinder from Ellen Equipment in Denver last summer, and just got time to remove the pully system to rebuild it. I have a Case 1740. I was using it and the mounting plate for the gear box snapped. I didn't notice anything wrong until I eventually started losing power.
