best mid size excavator The 18000 lb excavator works but it is slow digging bigger stumps (18+ inches) in this soil, requiring more digging and repositioning to get the stump free. In my opinion the best Excavator on the market is Komatsu. I work for a large sewer and water contractor in the Chicago area and all our excavators are Komatsu. In my 16 years as an Operating Engineer I have operated every brand of excavator and I believe the komatsu is the best. The old Cat's were good but the Komatsu blows them away today.
Back in '81 we headed from mid Michigan to Indiana, home made heavy built with 4 mobile home axles under it, box full of spares. To grab a Trojan 100, healthy 2 1/2 yard machine, all of 12-15ton. After using the loader to burm dirt so we could get it on the trailer, all the tires flattened out. Unloaded , pumped 150# in all 8, loaded back up. I'm starting to look around for a 6 ton (ish) mini/mid size excavator. There seems to be a lot of 5 and 5.5 ton machine from the different manufacturers, however, once you get to the 6 to 6.5 ton mark, the choices seem to be pretty limited. I currently run a JD50C, which has been a pretty good machine. It's a bit slow, but very reliable.
Go to an excavator driver training class if you have not driven an excavator a lot before. Budget will dictate your machine choice options, it costs money to transport machinery long distances so you need to have an idea of how far awy it is sensible to source a machine from. Tree size - over 100 feet tall and 4 foot wide stump etc? A mid size excavator 17000 pound class and a CTL is what we have found to be the best for all septic installations. We have a 310E Deere that was used until we found out the Komatsu 75UU was much better paired with the CTL.
I hear ya' now. Depending on the size jobs you perform, an 1140 size machine and a T300 could be a very leathal combo. A 953 is an awsome machine for all around tasks on medium to large jobs as well, just more expensive to own and operate. I have a T250 that works with the 953 sometimes and they compliment each other depending on the job. I have a nice 710D cab backhoe with 4 in 1 bucket, thumb, super nice machine just missing AC, Think I've decided on trading it or selling and picking up a 85-160 size trackhoe. Any advice on hours or sizes that yield best value for using around the ranch, has to have a thumb and AC, and enough power to track and operate at the same time.
