5000-6000 hours is usually pretty trouble free. After that hoses start to fail. We have put 10000 hours on Kubota engines. As you said maintenance and how hard it was worked is the big thing Bigger skid steers (like bigger tractors) can go longer hours. Personally I wouldn't buy one with over 2500 hours on it. I'm sure the motor is fine, but it's all the little stuff (hoses, connections, joints, etc) that just starts eating you alive.
